Important changes to Income Support and Jobseeker's Allowance
The Government's proposed changes to the rules for lone parents receiving Income Support and for all parents claiming Jobseeker's Allowance. These are part of wider changes to the benefits system to help people develop the skills for work and move into paid employment if they can.
From October 2010, lone parents with a youngest child aged 7 or over will no longer be entitled to Income Support if they are only claiming it because they are a lone parent. Instead, with our support, they will have to look for paid work or make a claim for Jobseeker's Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance if they are not able to work due to a health condition or disability.
To ensure each individual is fully supported, the changes will be phased-in over the next three years for lone parents with:
- a youngest child aged 12 or over from November 2008 (Phase 1);
- a youngest child aged 10 or over from October 2009 (Phase 2); and
- a youngest child aged 7 or over from October 2010 (Phase 3).
These changes will not apply to lone parents if they are entitled to Income Support for other reasons. For example if they:
- have children who are entitled to the middle or highest rate care component of Disability Living Allowance;
- claim Carer's Allowance;
- are fostering and have a foster child living with them;
- are claiming Incapacity Benefit or Credits.
